Mitsubishi Outlander

The Outlander is a relatively new addition to the Mitsubishi range, having been introduced in Japan in 2001. The vehicle has been designed to act as a 'crossover' between ordinary cars and 4 by 4 vehicles. Crossover cars have become very highly popular in the past decade, filling the gap in the market left by people carriers and estate cars during the 90s. Many crossovers offer only the appearance of off-road ability, but the Mitsubishi Outlander goes a step further and offers full four-wheel drive, high ground clearance and torque, all the while still offering relatively low emissions levels as well as car-like ride quality and comfort.

The original 2001 model featured a 2.0 litre engine, or a 2.4 litre engine as a higher end option. A version with just front-wheel drive is available, with the full four-wheel drive option providing greater flexibility and off-road capabilities, though at an increased cost. A high performance 2.0 litre turbo engine version was also made. All Mitsubishi Outlander cars manufactured up until 2005 belong to the first generation.

Awarded four stars at the NCAP car safety tests, the best selling crossover vehicle in Japan and a generally big seller worldwide, used Mitsubishi Outlanders tend to retain their value well. Nearly new Mitsubishi Outlanders benefit from re-worked body designs over the years, the most recent happening in 2010.

Mitsubishi Outlander sales have remained strong from the model's first release to the present day. The choice of engine, the four-wheel drive option and off-road capabilities, and the affordable cost help to keep this vehicle a firm favourite with the driving public. The high utility of this reliable crossover vehicle makes it a popular choice as either an introduction to the world of 4 by 4s or a family car with a little something extra - or both.
