Renault Twingo

The Renault Twingo followed the Renault 4 and was built to resemble a 1982 Polish car called the Beskid. Launched at the Paris Motor Show in September 1992, the name is derived form the words 'twist', 'swing' and 'tango.'

Chronology

After its first showing, the Twingo went on sale in April 1993 as a 3-door hatchback city car, available in four colours. This first generation of Renault Twingo cars was produced until 2007, although it is still produced in Columbia for the South American market. From June 1994 the Twingo was available in more colours.

The Twingo has a simple design. When launched it had revolutionary features including a centrally mounted instrument panel, a sliding rear seat to increase boot capacity or leg room for rear seat passengers. The first generation models all had petrol engines.

A small remodel in 1996 provided a new engine and a third brake light. In 2000 a new version was launched with larger wheels and in 2004 the car was available in more colours, with the Renault logo on the boot. In 2006 a battery powered electric version was shown at the Geneva Motor Show.

The second generation was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007 and is still in production. With 5-speed manual or automatic, the Twingo was available with a 1.2l petrol or 1.5l diesel engine.

In 2008 the Twingo Renaultsport model was launched, with a new engine and Renaultsport styling. In 2010 a convertible version, named Wind, was launched at the Geneva Motor Show. A third generation will be launched in 2012, with a new design and branding.

Achievements and Benefits

There are many reasons to buy a second-hand Renault Twingo. Many parts of the Twingo are shared with other Renault vehicles, making it easier to obtain parts. The second generation have greater strength and crash protection. Renault Twingo sales of second-hand cars continue, providing reliable cars that are good value for money.
