Volkswagen Golf

The Golf is literally steeped in motoring history, having undergone many facelifts and transformations since its launch in 1974. Volkswagen Golf cars are phenomenally successful in the UK, selling over 1.5 million models over their illustrious history.

In May 1974, Volkswagen announced their Golf Mk 1 to the world. Dubbed as the replacement to the outdated Volkswagen Beetle, the car was marketed as an affordable, yet stylish and comfortable motor for a mass audience. The model was so well revered that it gained second place at the European Car of the Year Awards, an achievement that would add to the Golf's fame.

Volkswagen Golf sales saw a further increase upon the launch of the Golf Mk 2 in 1983. Aesthetically similar to its predecessor, the Mk 2 boasted slightly larger dimensions and a refinement to the bodywork of the Mk 1. The second offering from the Golf was warmly received, being awarded What Car's magazine's Car of the Year for 1985. Used Volkswagen Golf Mk 2s continue to be a rare collector's item.

In 1991 the Golf Mk 3 was launched to critical acclaim, gaining the European Car of the Year Award amongst others. The Mk 3 has been the starting point for every re-launch since, at least stylistically as the Mk 4 (1997-2004) and the present Golf visually borrowed heavily from this model.

The fact that the Volkswagen Golf has been highly commended by critics worldwide since 1974 serves as a testament to the durability and universal appeal of this iconic model. Upon every re launch of the car, sales have only increased and respect for the German manufacturer has followed suit. Ride comfort, depreciation and maintenance costs are all addressed over the Golf range, mean that a nearly new Volkswagen Golf is a sound investment for any consumer.
