Volkswagen Polo

The Volkswagen Polo was originally launched in 1975 and received much critical acclaim. Seen as a more affordable version of the Volkswagen Golf, the Polo has lots in common with its slightly older alternative. , Since the Volkswagen Polo went into production it has undergone numerous regenerations, five in total, and is revered throughout the international motoring community.

The Polo was basically a re-branded Audi A50. However, unlike the A50, the Polo was had a more basic design and was therefore more affordable and successful. After four years of production, half a million Volkswagen Polo cars had been sold worldwide; a figure which was only to increase when the Polo Mk 2 was released in 1981. The Mk 2 would be produced for nine years until 1990 and was the subject of innovation for the German manufacturer. For example, a supercharger was introduced to the GT Polo for the first time and a system was also used to cut the engine whilst in traffic.

Volkswagen Polo sales saw a further jump in 1994 when their Mk 3 model became available. Using the floor plan of the hugely successful Mk 3 Golf, the car borrowed heavily from its sister model in many respects. This Polo also utilised many parts from the Seat Ibiza, such as the engine and dashboard, although the exterior was unique.

The Polo has been renowned for its many re-worked models, and thus many different used Volkswagen Polo models are available. The Mk 3 and Mk 4 models were given numerous facelifts, although the Mk 5 model finally replaced them in 2009.

Volkswagen Polo sales have undoubtedly helped the company to become one of the top 25 companies in the world, selling over 6.2 million vehicles in 2010. The Polo is also present in the world of motor sport, with its own team in the World Rally Championship, gaining massive success and ensuring that the model remains at the forefront of innovation and style.
