Volkswagen Touran

The Volkswagen Touran was launched in 2003 to fill a gap in the range. The Touran is a compact MPV and is largely based on the Volkswagen Golf. However, upon closer inspection the car stands up well in its own right. Modelled on both the Golf and the VW Sharan, the Touran is literally a merger between 'tour' and 'Sharan' although it is much smaller than its counterpart.

Upon the arrival of the Touran, critics noted the startling similarities to the Volkswagen Golf. In Japan the car is actually called the Golf Touran. Whilst such similarities must be conceded, it is important to note the emphasis on fuel efficiency and comfort that Volkswagen placed on the Touran. Volkswagen Touran cars saw the introduction of electro-mechanical steering; a system whereby the weight of the steering is adjusted by the speed of the vehicle, helping improve efficiency in low and idle speeds. Furthermore, Volkswagen chose the Touran to launch its 2.0 TDI engine, a system whereby greater efficiency and power output is gained by vast improvements to the combustion system.

The Touran was relaunched in 2007. For the re-worked model, ParkAssist was introduced. ParkAssist actually helps parks the car for owners who are apprehensive about parallel parking. The Touran was chosen as the first in the Volkswagen range to receive this feature.

In August 2010, Volkswagen Touran sales received a boost upon the launch of the updated model. Boasting many new features in comparison to the older version, such as improved ParkAssist, more efficient suspension and light assist for Xenon headlights; the new Touran has cemented its place as a reliable, compact MPV.

The Touran definitely fills a gap in Volkswagen's massive market, and as such a nearly new Volkswagen Touran should undoubtedly be considered by those looking for a superb all round MPV in these financially difficult times.
